Women's Opportunity Center in Rwanda

Photography by Bruce Engel
The Women's Opportunity Center is a 5-acre site located in Kayoza, Rwanda empowering a community of up to 300 women through education, resources, and infrastructure. Initiated by the NGO Women for Women International and designed by NY-based firm Sharon Davis Design, the center includes classrooms, community space, organic fruit and vegetable gardens, and a farmer's market, as well as lodging and office space. We designed the signage, wayfinding and entrance map, providing a key to the cluster of pavilions based on the vernacular of a traditional Rwandan village. The entrance map, written in both English and Kinyarwandan includes diagrams depicting the life cycles work on site, like rainwater harvesting and composting toilets. Inspired by the bright patterns of the women's clothing, we developed a signage system using a color-coded system with icons at to ensure that all women, no matter their level of literacy can find their way.
