On the occasion of 唐霜 Tang Shuang’s appointment as Editor-in-Chief at Numéro China, 2x4 Founding Partner Michael Rock and 2x4 Beijing Creative Director 辛静 Jing Xin designed a typography-only cover featuring the text of Shuang’s inaugural Editor’s Letter. Set against a field of fluorescent green, the type suggests a digital cacophony rooted in ancient seal script texts.
In addition to the cover design, Michael Rock contributed a new essay – “No Time Like the Present.” Taking Shuang’s letter as a departure, the text interrogates the impact of easy access to vast digital archives on design process. “Fashion is and has always been cannibalistic — gorging on its own history with the insatiable appetite of a monster that can ingest anything.” This voraciousness has been accelerated, like everything else, by digital tools that enable “curation at terminal velocity” where “every reference is equalized by the interface and submitted to the same rapacious present.”
