Grand Palais

As a part of the comprehensive renovation of the Parisian icon Grand Palais, 2x4 collaborated with interior architects Atelier Senzu, historical architects Chatillon Architectes, and industrial designer Samy Rio to develop a visitor experience platform and integrated signage system to guide visitors effortlessly through its public spaces. As a renowned cultural landmark, the spatial strategy centers on preserving and highlighting the architecture’s rich historical significance while bringing the voice of the institution – typography, color palette, and materiality – into the present day.

The design system balances a consistent visual language and nomenclature throughout the site with distinctive material and color adaptations that highlight the unique character of individual spaces, both inside and outside the building. Exterior signage draws inspiration from the distinctive verdigris metalwork particular to the Art Nouveau period that defines the Grand Palais and the beloved Parisian public park system more widely. Within the Nef, signage employs a bronze palette, reflecting subtlety and restraint. In the new build, bold, contemporary typography glazed and cast in terracotta and vibrant orange highlights strike a balance between Grand Palais’ storied heritage and architectural grandeur and a more energetic, welcoming, inclusive atmosphere.
