Founded in 1962 and based in Washington D.C., the National Portrait Gallery holds a collection of thousands of portraits: from politicians, to scientists, to activists, and performers, foregrounding portraiture to tell uniquely American stories. Since 2018, the Portrait Gallery has displayed the official portraits of President Barack Obama, by Kehinde Wiley, and Mrs. Michelle Obama, by Amy Sherald. Beginning in June 2021, The Obama Portraits Tour will travel to five museums in cities across the US sharing the iconic artworks with millions of people around the country.
We designed the tour identity, drawing inspiration from the bold clarity of type-driven concert posters. Each venue is highlighted as the Tour progresses — celebrating all of the people that will be part of this monumental event, city to city. Our work includes assets across print and digital, including large-scale advertisements and video.
