Land—Art surveys Theaster Gates’ multi-nodal practice that spans the seemingly divergent worlds of ethical redevelopment and art making. Or, as Gates writes in the opening of the book, “how urban transformation happens through culture.” This compendium organizes the surfeit of original research, essays, artworks, ideas, and space initiatives that he and his organizations have crafted over the last twenty-five years. We worked closely with Gates to create a visual and verbal identity for the world of his work. Our graphic expressions included an interpretation of the diagrammatic language in which Gates constantly communicates and a full timeline of his practice, mapping material and form.
